IT: How to setup Zebra ZD421 Thermal Printer

Follow the steps to setup the Zebra Thermal Printer.


  1. Search for the Zebra printer drivers on google. In this case ( https://www.zebra.com/gb/en/support-downloads/printers/desktop/zd421.html#Tab-item-8f54126b57-tab )
    1. Download the Windows Printer Driver V10 (at time of writing).
    2. Download the Zebra Printer setup Utilities for Windows.
  2. Install the Windows Driver and follow all the installation steps.
  3. Power on the Printer and Connect all required cables to computer or network.
  4. Install the Zebra Printer Setup Utilites and follow the steps until it is installed.
  5. Once the Setup Utilites is running the printer should automatically pop up in the display box.



Follow the below steps to configure the printers thermal media.

  1. Open Zebra Setup Utilites that was installed in previous steps.
  2. Select the printer from the display box.
  3. Click on the configure printer settings:
    1. Enter the details of the label that will be used in the printer, Unit of measurement then the Width and Height of the label in that unit.
    2. Hit next and the settings do not need to be changed.
    3. Select the method of printing.
      1. If using Thermal Transfer please ensure the Ribbon and cartridge are installed into the printer.
      2. If using Direct thermal transfer please select this option and ensure the labels are fed under the print head correctly.
    4. Select the media type.
    5. If a tear off adjustment is needed to find the correct gap, please insert now else leave blank.
    6. Untick Continue wizard with advanced settings and click next.
    7. Save the settings to file if you need to quickly setup the printer again on another computer and all the settings were lost.
    8. Click finish.


Follow the below to setup the bluetooth.

  1. Open Zebra Setup Utilites that was installed in previous steps.
  2. Select the printer from the display box.
  3. Click on the configure printer connectivity:
    1. Select the type of connectivity settings you want to enter and Click next in this case Bluetooth.
      1. Enter the bluetooth name you want to see when looking for the device.
      2. Ensure it is discoverable
      3. Minimum security mode can stay at 1
      4. Enter a pin for pairing
      5. Bonding must stay on.
      6. Enable auto reconnect can stay on.
      7. Pairing Method I have set to Just works
      8. Controller Mode I have set to Classic and Low Energy.
    2. Click next and set minimum security to none.
    3. pairing method leave on User Printer settings Click next.
    4. Don't make any changes. Click next.
    5. Send Data to the printer and click finish.
